Oakwood School

Oakwood is a small specialist registered DfES school, which caters for children aged 11-16 years of age, who primarily have emotional and behavioural difficulties. Therefore, have found it difficult to achieve their full potential in the mainstream sector

The School tolerates a wide variety of behaviours but does not accept them as inevitable and unchangeable. The individual’s behaviours will be prioritised and through planned intervention and adherence to the rewards and sanctions in the Behaviour Policy, ensure that the consequences to behaviour are specific and limited.

Children are encouraged to develop appropriate behaviour patterns. There is a warm caring attitude in adult-child relationships together with individual/ group tutorials and the systematic use of incentives. Children are dealt with as individuals and this facilitates pastoral care.

Aims of the School

  • To develop and encourage home/ school contact in order to reinforce the positives for each child
  • To keep carers/ parents informed and to ensure that the parent/ school partnership develops in a positive manner
  • To improve behaviour
  • To encourage attendance
  • To encourage attainment
  • To prepare pupils for Mainstream School/adult life

Careers Education
Careers education is offered to all pupils 13-16 years of age. Emphasis is placed on industrial links and the world of work. An action plan is drawn up for each pupil who is 14 years old and an interview arranged by Connexions and the Careers Officer at the school, where they are helped to formalise the action plan.

Younger pupils who do not receive Careers education may be invited to take part in activities i.e. talks, presentations trips connected with careers and looking at career opportunities.

Special Educational Needs

ClassRoom

Based entirely on meeting the needs of each individual child, the School plans individual education programmes (I.E.P.) and individual behaviour programmes (IBP) for all pupils, thus catering for different needs at all stages of the ability scale.

The school links with other professionals in order to bring a multi-disciplinary outlook on particular difficulties experienced
by individual children.
